- Fragrances, which are often synthetic. Look for essential oil-based fragrance instead.
- Parabens as preservatives. Paraben will be found in the ingredient name (example: ethylparaben). Look for natural preservatives like vegetable glycerine instead.
- Sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate can cause irritation and exacerbate skin conditions like acne.
- Phthalates such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) have been linked to endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and cancer.
- Oxybenzone, found in many sunscreens. It’s a potential endocrine disrupter and harmful to coral reefs.
